VARSITIES SLIP: New Zealand universities have slipped in rankings from the latest international survey of tertiary institutions. The University of Auckland is the only NewZealand university to have made it to the top 100, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings 2010. Auckland slipped seven places to 68 this year. The University of Otago dropped from 125 last year to 135. The University of Canterbury fell one place to 189. Massey was ranked 302, down from last year’s 299. Victoria managed to climb to 225th position from last year’s 229th. The top 10 positions were dominated by U.S. and British universities, Cambridge , Harvard, and Yale occupying the top three positions. Overall rankings are based on an on-line survey distributed to academics worldwide with reports released annually. – NZPA
